Western part of the island, called La Dehesa, it's a lonely area – You can only meet here shepherds grazing goats. search, steep slopes, after which the wind blows, lava fields and high cliffs do not look friendly, however, they are delightful in their own way.
Verodal Beach
Just 6 km west of Pozo de la Salud lies the beach of Verodal, which is very popular for a reason. A quiet cove, the shadow cast by the volcanic hill shimmering with many colors and the sand with an unusual black and red shade make it, that is one of the most picturesque places on the island, and also one of the best for sunbathing. When bathing, it is necessary to pay special attention, even if the water in the bay seems calm – on the north coast, strong currents and unexpected high waves are not surprising. For hungry sunbathers there is a perfectly prepared place for a picnic and barbecue (there is even wood!), however, you have to remember, that there is no shop or bar near the beach. An asphalt road leads to the site, starting at the hotel in Pozo de la Salud. A few kilometers after Arenas Blancas, turn right, in marked, gravel and unfortunately bumpy road, which will lead to the beach itself.
Hermitage Virgen de los Reyes i okolice
To the west of the island, in the area called La Dehesa, there is a charming white sanctuary, where the Virgin de los Reyes statue is kept – patronki El Hierro. It is the most important place on the island and a destination for numerous pilgrimages of the inhabitants. In honor of Madonna, a famous fiesta takes place every four years, Yirgen de los Reyes descent. The sanctuary can be reached from the south, and from the north. Coming from Valverde or La Restingi, it is best to go to El Pinar and take the road to Faro de Orchilla (by El Julan). The easiest route from El Golfo is through Sabinosa, Verodal Beach and Orchilla Lighthouse. Both roads are very well marked.
Miraculous arrival of the Virgen de los Reyes
In winter 1545 r. shepherds grazing goats in the western part of the island, called La Dehesa, they noticed a sailing ship approaching Punta de Orchilla. It would not be an extraordinary sight, if not for the fact, that the sailing ship tried several times to leave the shore and sail west, however, each time a changing wind directed the ship towards the island. First days passed like that, then weeks and months – the sailors tirelessly tried to sail away, and the wind constantly drove them towards the land. The time has finally come, when the sailors were forced to land, to replenish water and food supplies. In return for providing food, the captain offered the islanders a statue of the Virgin Mary, which he kept on board. After a short deliberation, the locals agreed to the captain's offer and 6 January 1546 r., on Epiphany, there was a historical exchange. The next day, the inhabitants placed the statue in a specially prepared grotto, a farm, no problem this time, he sailed towards the horizon. In memory of this event, the statue of the patron saint of Hierro is called Our Lady of the Magi.
