According to myth, the mighty dragon Ladon guarded the golden apples of Hera in the garden of Atlantis (according to legends, Tenerife is a remnant of Atlantis). Hercules, mythical hero, defeated the dragon and won golden apples. Dragon trees grew from the blood of Ladon's dragon all over the island. Hera mourned her dragon so, that she placed him in the sky, where to this day he shines as the constellation of the Dragon.
Smokowiec is an endemic to Madeira and the Canary Islands, with only a few hundred copies. Plants belonging to this species form tall, dark gray, reaching up to 20 m trunk dividing into branches, which are dark green, narrow saber-like leaves form a crown in the shape of an umbrella. Growth is slow - after approx. 10 years it reaches a height 1 m. The wood is devoid of rings, so age can only be judged by the division of the branches. For the Guanche people, the first known inhabitants of the Canary Islands, this tree had magical properties. This is partly because of the fact, that after cutting the bark or leaves, the outflowing resin oxidizes to a reddish color called dragon's blood.
The oldest dragon tree in Tenerife grows in the town of Icod de Los Vinos. The age of the tree is estimated at over 1000 years,(the ticket costs within the limits 5 Euro).
In the north of the island you can find large dragon trees, growing above banana plantations and in the lower parts of the mountains. Just look around carefully
